XW324 Jet Provost T5
Jet Provost XW324, now flying on the civilian register as G-BWSG, is a classic British jet trainer that represents an important era in post-war military aviation. Designed for clarity, robustness, and predictable handling, the Jet Provost was the Royal Air Force’s first purpose-built jet trainer and formed the backbone of RAF fast-jet instruction for decades.

The aircraft is owned and operated by Viper Classic Jets, a UK-based operator specialising in the preservation and operation of historic military jet aircraft. XW324 is based at East Midlands Airport, from where it operates for training, display, and heritage flying throughout the year.

In civilian operation, G-BWSG continues to demonstrate the qualities that made the type so successful in service. Powered by a single turbojet engine, the aircraft offers smooth, linear thrust response and benign handling characteristics across its flight envelope. Its straight-wing design and well-balanced control surfaces provide excellent stability, making it ideally suited to display flying, continuation training, and heritage operations.

The cockpit layout reflects its instructional origins, with clear instrumentation, logical systems grouping, and excellent external visibility from both seats. The aircraft retains fully live ejection seats, maintained and operated in accordance with approved procedures, preserving both authenticity and operational capability. Dual controls allow the aircraft to be operated safely for training, demonstration, and familiarisation flights while maintaining the true character of a military jet trainer.

Operationally, G-BWSG is maintained to a strict, military-based maintenance programme, applied within the civilian regulatory environment. This approach ensures that the aircraft meets modern airworthiness requirements while retaining the standards, discipline, and attention to detail associated with frontline military operation.

Today, Jet Provost XW324 stands as a flying link between military training aviation and the civilian warbird community. Operated by Viper Classic Jets from East Midlands Airport, it combines historical significance with practical, reliable operation, ensuring that the sights, sounds, and experience of Britain’s early jet age remain alive for future generations.
